You probably didn't learn this Bible story as a kid. It probably didn't make your Sunday School curriculum. You probably didn't hear it through the Christian grapevine either if you grew up outside of the church. And there's good reason for that. There's also good reason to hear it. This is a Scripture that contains not just a prophecy of the Christ, but arguable the most recognized Christ prophecy in the entire Bible.  There's a reason it is. The Scriptures are so honest about life in this world. God's prophets who wrote a huge portion of the Scriptures are too. Here God's struggling prophet shows us the question that each of our hearts is asking about our ultimate future. He asks, "What can we say about it that's actually true? Will we really last?" And God gives here his answer in powerful, powerful language that is so memorable that people have now been quoting it for centuries. It is now the deep cry of every Christian's heart. Your Pain, God's Grief

A Sermon Based on Isaiah 64:1-8

God wants us to be spiritually authentic about our lives. He wants us to joy to the heights when times are good. He also wants us to express our pain when we feel grief. Our culture doesn't agree. Our culture urges us to live spiritually plastic lives - to push down our very real feelings of pain. This sermon explains though that it's not just culture that stops us from feeling the very real pain in our lives - from truly lamenting what's broken in them. There is something far more profound going in us that stops us from doing it. BUT once we do react - once we do allow ourselves to feel the pain of our broken hearts God uses that lament to begin to break open our hearts in a brand new way: with HOPE.
