Exodus: The Song of the New Life

A Sermon Based on Exodus 15:19-21

Exodus speeds by much like our lives do: fast. It does so until, finally, it halts for a moment when the people are standing on a new shore of life. It then turns from a rush of narrative and prose into a whole chapter of poetry. Why is that? Why does Miriam sing? This sermon asserts that the parting of the Red Sea is a type that anticipates Christian baptism. Miriam sings, then, because God’s people need to understand everything this new life means. What does it mean? This sermon sings to you the answer.

The Baptism of Our Lord

A Sermon Based on Matthew 3:13-17

The Baptism of Our Lord used to be can’t miss worship. People used to show up for it like it was Easter. It also used to be can’t miss preaching. Preachers as important as Ignatius of Antioch, Chrysostom, Jerome, and Martin Luther preached some of their most memorable and beloved sermons for the event. Today the event frankly doesn’t get a lot of attention. Why not? This sermon explores that question seeking to move the baptism of Jesus deeply into the heart of the listener.

The Jesus Who Stands in Your Muck

(A Sermon Based on Mark 1:4-11)

Universally humans have a sense of grit, grime, and muck about their lives. And, yes, it's universal. Humans all in some way want to rid themselves of the past, find a clean slate, and write a new chapter to the book of their lives. We see that especially this time of year as we try to get back to the gym or church or resolve something fresh that we hope not to muck up this year. Mark skips Christmas to minister to that sense. Dive into this incredible Scripture from Mark for the ultimate clean slate. Listen in below.

Your Thing That Isn't a Thing

The Fifth Sermon in a Series called Romans The Gospel According to Paul Based on Romans 6:1-11

You've got your thing and I've got my thing, but we've all got our thing. It might be a thing that you want to get rid of. Like your fear. Or your anxiety. Or your depression. Or your people pleasing. Or your money spending habits. Those things could be your thing. Or it might be a thing you want that you know you shouldn’t have, but it still compels you. It still drives you. It’s a thing that you think you need to have to be happy. To be satisfied. To be ok. You know – your thing. It might be – how can this be put delicately? – a certain need that you have. Or your personal success however you define it. Or your respect. Or your financial security. Or the admiration of your peers. Or nicer stuff. You know your thing. Your thing that you don’t really want to tell anybody about. The thing that makes you feel and do things out of kilter and out of order. The thing that is broken and busted and off about you. This is a sermon about freedom from that thing. Listen in and live free!
